梗概: Modern Boy, Modern Girl examines the
dynamic urban culture of early twentieth century Japan. Through
paintings, posters, magazines and photographs, a fascinating and
unfamiliar period of Japanese culture is presented for the first
time in English. Synopsis:The Taisho period (1912-1926) in Japan
witnessed the development of a new urban culture which rebelled
against tradition and embraced the West. The modern boys and modern
girls of Japan wore the latest European fashions and preferred
Ibsen plays and Schubert to Kabuki theatre. In painting, graphics,
architecture and cinema, western styles such as cubism, expressionism,
surrealism and art-deco confronted and revitalized traditional
Japanese customs and values.
